Hymn
Exsultet cælum laudibus
Let heaven’s exultant praises ring,And earth with joy responsive sing:The Apostles’ deeds and high estateThis festal-tide we celebrate.
O ye who, throned in glory dread,Shall judge the living and the dead,True lights, the world illumining,Regard the suppliant prayer we bring.
The gates of heaven, at your command,To all or closed or open stand:May we, at your august decree,Be loosed from our iniquity.
The power, of old to you conveyed,Sickness and health alike obeyed:May ye our ailing souls once moreTo strength and holiness restore;
That Christ, the unerring Judge of doom,When he at time’s last end shall come,May grant us, for his mercy’s sake,Of joys eternal to partake.
All honour, laud, and glory be,O Jesu, Virgin-born, to thee; All glory, as is ever meet,To Father and to Paraclete.Amen.
℣.Right worthy of honour is blessed John the Apostle.
℟.Who leaned on the Lord’s bosom at the last supper.
Ant. There went this saying abroad * among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, if I will that he tarry till I come.
MagnificatMagnificat anima mea Dominum
Luke 1:46–55
My soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
2For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden.
3For behold, from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed.
4For he that is mighty hath magnified me: * and holy is his Name.
5And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations.
6He hath shewed strength with his arm: * he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
7He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek.
8He hath filled the hungry with good things; * and the rich he hath sent empty away.
9He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel; * as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever.
Bow. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;Stand upright. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Ant. There went this saying abroad * among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, if I will that he tarry till I come.
