Opening

Sir, ask a blessing is not said, nor the Short Lesson, nor Our help, nor the Lord’s Prayer; but the Officiant begins the Confession immediately. After the Confession and Absolution the Psalms are begun at once.

I CONFESS to God Almighty, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, (to our blessed Father Benedict,) and to all the Saints, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed: by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault. Wherefore I beg blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, (our blessed Father Benedict,) and all the Saints, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Almighty God have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

℟.Amen.

May the Almighty and Merciful Lord grant unto us pardon, ✠ absolution, and remission of our sins.

℟.Amen.

Psalm 4Cum invocarem exaudivit me

Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness * thou hast set me at liberty when I was in trouble; have mercy upon me, and hearken unto my prayer.

2O ye sons of men, how long will ye blaspheme mine honour * and have such pleasure in vanity, and seek after leasing?

3Know this also, that the Lord hath chosen to himself the man that is godly * when I call upon the Lord, he will hear me.

4Stand in awe, and sin not * commune with your own heart, and in your chamber, and be still.

5Offer the sacrifice of righteousness * and put your trust in the Lord.

6There be many that say * Who will shew us any good?

7Lord, lift thou up * the light of thy countenance upon us.

8Thou hast put gladness in my heart * since the time that their corn and wine and oil increased.

9I will lay me down in peace, and take my rest * for it is thou, Lord, only, that makest me dwell in safety.

Psalm 91Qui habitat in adjutorio

Whoso dwelleth under the defence of the most High * shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2I will say unto the Lord, Thou art my hope, and my strong hold * my God, in him will I trust.

3For he shall deliver thee from the snare of the hunter * and from the noisome pestilence.

4He shall defend thee under his wings, and thou shalt be safe under his feathers * his faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5Thou shalt not be afraid for any terror by night * nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6For the pestilence that walketh in darkness * nor for the sickness that destroyeth in the noon-day.

7A thousand shall fall beside thee, and ten thousand at thy right hand * but it shall not come nigh thee.

8Yea, with thine eyes shalt thou behold * and see the reward of the ungodly.

9For thou, Lord, art my hope * thou hast set thine house of defence very high.

10There shall no evil happen unto thee * neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11For he shall give his angels charge over thee * to keep thee in all thy ways.

12They shall bear thee in their hands * that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone.

13Thou shalt go upon the lion and adder * the young lion and the dragon shalt thou tread under thy feet.

14Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him * I will set him up, because he hath known my Name.

15He shall call upon me, and I will hear him * yea, I am with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and bring him to honour.

16With long life will I satisfy him * and shew him my salvation.

Psalm 134Ecce nunc benedicite Dominum

Behold now, praise the Lord * all ye servants of the Lord;

2Ye that by night stand in the house of the Lord * even in the courts of the house of our God.

3Lift up your hands in the sanctuary * and praise the Lord.

4The Lord that made heaven and earth * give thee blessing out of Sion.

Nunc DimittisNunc dimittis servum tuum

Luke 2:29–32

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace * according to thy word.

2For mine eyes have seen * thy salvation;

3Which thou hast prepared * before the face of all people;

4To be a light to lighten the Gentiles * and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

When the Antiphon Christ, for our sake is begun, all kneel; and when it is ended the Our Father is said entirely in secret. Then in a somewhat higher voice is said Psalm 51.

Ant. Christ, ✠ for our sake, became obedient unto death.

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Psalm 51Miserere mei, Deus

Have mercy upon me, O God, after thy great goodness * according to the multitude of thy mercies do away mine offences.

2Wash me throughly from my wickedness * and cleanse me from my sin.

3For I acknowledge my faults * and my sin is ever before me.

4Against thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight * that thou mightest be justified in thy saying, and clear when thou art judged.

5Behold, I was shapen in wickedness * and in sin hath my mother conceived me.

6But lo, thou requirest truth in the inward parts * and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly.

7Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean * thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness * that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

9Turn thy face from my sins * and put out all my misdeeds.

10Make me a clean heart, O God * and renew a right spirit within me.

11Cast me not away from thy presence * and take not thy holy Spirit from me.

12O give me the comfort of thy help again * and stablish me with thy free Spirit.

13Then shall I teach thy ways unto the wicked * and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

14Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou that art the God of my health * and my tongue shall sing of thy righteousness.

15Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord * and my mouth shall shew thy praise.

16For thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it thee * but thou delightest not in burnt-offerings.

17The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit * a broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt thou not despise.

18O be favourable and gracious unto Sion * build thou the walls of Jerusalem.

19Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations * then shall they offer young bullocks upon thine altar.

The Psalm being ended, there is said, without Let us pray, in a low voice, the Collect of the day, its conclusion Who with thee ... liveth being said in silence. Thus are ended all the Hours during this Triduum, through None of Holy Saturday.

Almighty God, we beseech thee graciously to behold this thy family, for which our Lord Jesus Christ was contented to be betrayed, and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the cross: Who with thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth God, world without end. Amen.
